LMU's Center for Ignatian Spirituality to screen
preview of The Camino Documentary
LOS ANGELES, February 9, 2010, Loyola Marymount University’s Center for Ignatian Spirituality is pleased to host a presentation on the Camino de Santiago, the ancient spiritual pilgrim path in Northern Spain. The event will feature an exclusive screening of an extended 23-minute preview from the upcoming PBS documentary about the Camino. More than 250,000 people are expected to undertake this pilgrimage in 2010.
Come and learn why people from all over the world leave the comfort of their homes to walk for weeks on end to a cathedral in Northern Spain’s Santiago de Compostela.
Producer/director Lydia Smith and LMU Math Professor Herbert Medina, both seasoned Camino walkers, will provide an overview of the Camino. After the screening, Annie O’Neil, one of the featured pilgrims in the documentary, will join them for a question and answer session. Ms. Smith and her producing partner Theresa Tollini have had their award-winning films screened at numerous national and international festivals, including Sundance, Mill Valley Film Festival, Athens International Film Festival and London International Film Festival.
Ms. Smith’s experience of walking the Camino in 2008 led to her shooting the documentary in 2009. She assembled a top-notch international crew and shot over 300 hours during two months. Just like pilgrims who walk the Camino, she never could have anticipated the challenges and joys that she would encounter: overseeing two film crews stretched over hundreds of kilometers of Spanish countryside that was not always intended for a production van to traverse! Along with colorful stories about this unique shoot, is the ever-present backdrop of the spiritual nature of the Camino itself and how it worked its magic on her, her pilgrims, and her crew.
